The intersection of our individuality as viewer and artist has the potential to lead to conversation, collaboration, understanding, empathy, and connection.
— Lisa Hilton

I am awed by the multitude of possibilities for individual thoughts, ideas, reactions, and perceptions. Surface variation, texture, and gesture are expressive avenues I use to depict the layers of complexity inherent in every person. The slightest tilt of the head, drop of the shoulder, angle of the hand, or tilt of a hip may create different implications for different observers. I am intrigued by people’s stories. Their life experiences color their perceptions and ultimately their interpretation of art.

My figures are sculpted in clay with an emphasis on gesture and texture. I am fascinated by the physical and emotional complexity of people. The intersection of perception and human body language informs my work. Individuals have such unique combinations of characteristics related to physical traits, natural talent, motivation, belief, and fear. Added to these innate qualities are familial, educational, and cultural influences.  The outcomes increase exponentially when grouping two or more people. The complicated and sometimes mystifying interaction of these various influences inspires my art.
