Construction process
- All sculptures are hand built using additive and subtractive methods
- I will often start with slab and build from there
- Clay supports are used throughout the process to keep parts and pieces in position and to protect against cracking during the firing process
- Dowel rods and wire supports may be used to maintain gesture during sculpting
- All sculptures are either built hollow or cut and hollowed in the leather hard stage
- Clay bases on slab built
- Finish and Firing for Finding Balance Series: - Pieces are bisqued fired to Cone 05
- Sanding or grinding may be needed
- Porcelain Slip is generally brushed or sprayed and then the piece is fired to Cone 6
- An Oxide wash is applied and the piece is fired to Cone 6. This step may be repeated depending on the number of color washes and the depth of color desired.
- Amaco Velvet Underglazes are used on the bases
- Bases and sculptures are fired separately
- Sculptures are adhered to bases.
